Hij is gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van de muziekesthetiek en muziektheorie, de vocale polyfonie van 1400-1600 en muziek van 1770-1850. Sinds 1996 is hij Osgood Hooker Professor in Fine Arts op Stanford University. Van zijn hand verschenen meerdere essays, artikelen en boeken. Zijn meest recente werk is A Theory of Art (1999), waarin niet de vraag 'wat is kunst', maar de vraag 'waar is kunst voor bedoeld' centraal staat. 'What, if anything, has art to do with the rest of our lives, and in particular with those ethical and political issues that matter to us most? Will art created today be likely to play a role in our lives as profound as that of the best art in the past?'
