Ingrid Rowland studeerde oud-Grieks en klassieke archeologie aan het Bryn Mawr College, waar ze ook promoveerde. Haar reputatie als eminent kunsthistorica dankt zij aan studies als The Culture of the High Renaissance (1998), From Heaven to Arcadia (2004) en Giordano Bruno. Philosopher/Heretic (2008). Ze schrijft regelmatig voor The New York Review of Books en The New Republic.

Rowland is momenteel als hoogleraar verbonden aan de University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, met als standplaats Rome.
