Hij schreef Nietzsche: Life as Literature (1985), dat alom ontvangen is als meesterwerk, The Art of Living: Socratic Reflections from Plato to Foucault (1998) en Virtues of Authenticity: Essays on Plato and Socrates (1999). Binnenkort verschijnt van hem Only a Promise of Happiness: The Place of Beauty in a World of Art, dat een krachtig pleidooi bevat voor het herstel van schoonheid als filosofische notie en als waardeoordeel in de kunst.
