Addressing these large questions is not about giving spiritual advice, Kronman explains. If universities continue to ignore these questions, then, in his view, they are left to priests, rabbis and family. Philosophy, literature and other humanities can offer a counterbalance. “As a teacher, I can put the large questions before the students, explore them with some of the great answers that other human beings have given them. I can help the students map the landscape, so that they are able to navigate on their own.” |
