Rob Harmans is a historian, journalist, and translator. He regularly writes about history, poltitcs, philosophy and culture for De Groene Amsterdammer and Historisch Nieuwsblad, and published Vaarwel dan! Essays over intellectuelen en hun illusies (2000), De Groene van 1877. Geschiedenis van een dwars weekblad (2002), Alleen in de wind. Een leven in de twintigste eeuw (2007) and Lang leve de Linkse Kerk en andere essays over politieke hersenschimmen, misverstanden en illusies (2010).

In 2010, he founded the Committee for the Constitutional State with historian Jan Dirk Snel out of concern for Dutch liberal party VVD and christian democrats CDA to form a coalition supported by populist right wing PVV.
