During the German Historikerstreit of the 1980s, he stood up firmly to such conservative German historians as Nolte, Stürmer en Hilgruber, whom he accused of an overly great amount of historical understanding towards the dark sides of the Third Reich. Evans published a large amount of books, of which In Defense of History (1999) and the influential Third Reich trilogy (2003-2008) stand out. He wrote down his experience as an expert witness in the case against David Irving in Telling Lies About Hitler: The Holocaust, History and the David Irving Trial (2002).
