Max Nord
(The Netherlands, 1916)

 

worked as an art critic, editor-in-chief and correspondent (Paris) for the dutch journal Het Parool. He published collections of poems, a novel (Geen talent voor geluk, 1956) memoires (Achterwaarts, 1998) and biographies of Albert Helman, Luigi Pirandello and Josepha Mendels. He translated the works of Alain-Fournier, Yves Berger, Monique Wittig, Pirandello, Cesare Pavese, Molière, Giraudoux, Julien Green and Pirandello. In 1939 together with Menno ter Braak he translated Hermann Rauschning’s Gespräche mit Hitler (1940), but the the publication was forbidden by the dutch government because it was said to offend a befriended head of state. A trial against the translators and editor was cancelled because the war broke out.
