Marlene Dumas
(South-Africa, 1953)

has acquired world fame with her drawings and paintings, in particular her portraits. After studying at the University of Cape Town and at Ateliers ’63 in Haarlem, she set up as an independent artist in Amsterdam. She has had solo exhibitions in cities including London (Tate Gallery, 1995, Saatchi Gallery, 2005), Hamburg (Museum für Moderne Kunst, 1998) and Antwerp (1999). Her work frequently provides an incisive commentary on deeply entrenched social, ethnic, sexual and political role patterns. The magazine Elsevier awarded her third place in its Top 100 list of leading Dutch artists in 2006.
