Education at Wesleyan University, Université de Vincennes (Paris), Johns Hopkins University (PhD in Comparative Literature), Universitaet des Sarrlands (Fulbright), Johns Hopkins Center for Italian Studies (Florence). Employment at Columbia University since 1985. Specialized in European literature (German, French, Italian) from modernism to the present. Publications include Kafka’s Clothes: Ornament and Aestheticism in the Habsburg Fin de Siecle, Hitler’s Exiles: Personal Stories of the Flight from Nazi Germany to America, The Bad Conscience of Modernity (forthcoming). A literary translator and editor, Mark Anderson is currently working on a study of W. G. Sebald entitled The Reluctant German.
