is emeritus Professor at the University of Nice, member of the Institut universitaire de France and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur of the French Republic. He is also associated with the Institut d’Études Politiques in Aix-en-Provence and the Université Laval in Québec, Canada. His book La Barbarie intérieure. Essai sur l’immonde moderne (1999) was highly influential and won him the Prix du Cardinal Mercier of the Université catholique de Louvain in 2001. Among his other books are Heidegger et Hölderlin. Le Quadriparti (2001), Civilisation et barbarie. Réflexions sur le terrorisme contemporain (2002, with Denis Rosenfield), De l’indignation (2005) and, most recently, Le Regard vide. Essai sur l'épuisement de la culture européenne (2007). Mattéi is editor in chief to the journal Noesis en member of the editorial board of periodicals like Les Études philosophiques and Cités.
