emigrated to The Netherlands in 1937. He is emeritus professor of contemporary and cultural history at Utrecht University. Von der Dunk published widely on European, Dutch and German history, historiography and historical theory, such as De organisatie van het verleden (1982), De Shoah in ons Geschiedbeeld (1990) and a two-volume cultural history of Europe, De verdwijnende hemel (2000, German translation 2004).
