studied chemistry, law and social sciences in Amsterdam, where he completed his Ph.D in 1989. He taught at the Institute of Social Sciences in the Hague and was extraordinary professor of international relations at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Presently, he is a member of the Advisory board for International Matters at the dutch Ministeries of Foreign Affairs and Defence.
