He was Professor of Music and Visiting Professor at the University of Sussex, University of York (1971-1976 en 1977), King’s College London (1995). Untill the present day he still is the executor of Benjamin Britten’s legacy. On this composer he wrote Benjamin Britten: a Commentary on His Works (1952, 1972), Benjamin Britten: Death in Venice (1987) and Letters from a Life: Selected Letters and Diaries of Benjamin Britten (2004). His The Mahler Companion (1999), Gustav Mahler. The Early Years (1995) and Gustav Mahler. The Wunderhorn Years (2003) are among the standard books on this composer.
