Alongside his work as psychiatrist and his job as Professor of Psychotherapy at the University van Amsterdam, van Dantzig has published a large number of essays about his profession, mental health care and films. His oeuvre displays a considerable social commitment and a humanistic vision, and throughout his life he has been involved in trying to ensure a place on the political agenda for the spiritual suffering of ‘normal’ people.
