is a poet, novelist, literary critic and the author of many non-fiction books on subjects ranging from suicide, divorce and dreams – such as The Savage God (1974), Life After Marriage (1982) and Night (1995) – to poker (The Biggest Game in Town, 1983), the oil-industry (Offshore,) and mountaineering (Feeding the Rat, 1989). More recently, he published his autobiography Where Did It All Go Right? (1999) en New & Selected Poems (2002) and The Writer’s Voice (2005).
