Xenophon
(Greece ca. 428 B.C. - ca. 354 B.C.)

was a wealthy citizen of Athens and a friend of Socrates. He was active as a soldier and was known for his strong pro-Spartan opinions, which resulted in a number of conflicts with his fatherland and even led to a lengthy period of exile. His works include histographical works such as Hellenica and the well known Anabasis. He also wrote a number of texts about Socrates (Memoires of Socrates, Oeconomicus, Symposium en Apology), a work on royalty (Cyropedie) and a number of shorter works about, amongst other subjects, horses, hunting with dogs and the economy of Athens.
